Take him to the ocean and he'd jump in looking for sharks. Take him to the mountains and he'd see how high he could climb. One day when he was five, I watched in horror as he jumped off a roof—a garbage bag duct-taped to his back. We couldn't be more opposite, my son and I. The higher he climbs, the more he believes God is with him. Not me. I believe God put us on dry land and says, "Lo, I am with you always."

In his first year of college, he called one night to ask me for money. His father who contracts vertigo standing on a skateboard.

For years I've wondered what God would make of our son. Would he call him to be a crash-test dummy? A professional bungee jumper? Or would he fulfill every North American parent's dream by settling down in a huge house with a nice wife and provide us some grandchildren to spoil?

The unexpected answer arrived by e-mail one day:

Dear Dad and Mom,

I just want you to know that I met a couple nice girls and we're planning on being married. In Utah. Not really. But I did meet Lucy. You'll like her a lot. It's surprising how quickly you can find a Justice of the Peace down here. Lucy owns a tattoo parlor, but seldom works. Her father won some money in a lottery, so she's set for life. I won't need to work anymore either. I've bought a Mercedes convertible and you'll be happy to know I put a chrome fish on the bumper.

If you haven't fainted yet, here's the truth. It may be more shocking. In the country of Uganda, the Lord's Resistance Army is committing atrocities against children that are too awful for me to put in this letter. Over the years they've abducted 50,000 kids and turned the ones they haven't murdered into soldiers. I'd like to work with street children in Kampala. I'll be living with local missionaries. It will mean lots of needles and I'll need to raise a little money too.

Dad, you told me once that Jesus came to comfort us, not to make us comfortable. I guess I've been comforted enough; it's time to offer some to others.

Your son, Steve

"Where do you think we went wrong?" It's funny the questions people ask when they hear he's in Uganda. "Aren't you worried about his safety?" I have my moments. Check a list of the most dangerous spots on earth and Uganda nears the top. But is safety what we're here for? Isn't Complacency the most dangerous place on earth? Isn't Suburbia sucking the life out of our teenagers more than any foreign country ever could?

I sat with a missionary the other day who is pouring her life out in Pakistan, patching bodies and souls for Jesus. She's the only missionary in her area whose parents support her being there. I must be honest: I understand. There are times I'd rather Steve was home making good money—putting it away for my nursing home bills. Yet I cannot hope for more than this: that my children will hear God's voice despite a noisy culture, and that they will obey.

A few nights before he left I asked Steve what he'd miss most about home. "The dog," he said, smiling. Then why is it that I found him studying family photos and lounging on the sofa watching an old Disney movie with his brother and sister? Was he killing time? Or saying goodbye to the remnants of childhood?

I've shed a few tears, for sure. But mostly I've been giving thanks. For a son who's a much improved version of his father. For e-mail and cheap overseas phone rates. And I'm thankful there are no sharks in Uganda.

Phil Callaway is the best-selling author of a dozen books. I have been thinking about the family reunion again… and knowing how hard it was to book suitable accommodation last time…. We do need to be thinking generally about the dates & times for this time, so as to book something great. I know it is Jo’s turn to do this, but when we were staying with her, I offered to search the web for some places (as her internet is not so great) and let her know.
To start this process… we need to have some general dates to head for. If I remember rightly last time, we were going to aim for January (summer is easier to manage all round) but couldn’t, so should we be aiming for January now. The good places we want could be booked up to 1-2 years in advance, especially in January so I don’t think we are too premature in this discussion.

So last time was 2005, are we looking at Jan 2008 or 2009? Actually here there is very little to spend our money on, so that is good. We are just enjoying doing and being here with not much stress!
I have finished sanding, painting, sanding again & then varnishing the tables & chairs (see photos) and now both Jon & I have started oiling & varnishing the 10 doors for MEGA. Jon had sanded them all by hand before this! (I will include photos of MEGA and its progress next week.)
We have been playing soccer a bit (no-one really wants us on their side tho, cos we are useless & it comes so naturally to them!) and Frank has just completed the legs for the table-tennis table, so I'm sure that will become a fierce competition soon!
We had a little visitor to our bedroom the other night (lucky Jon found it before we went to sleep) in the form of a little frog (see photos) that could jump a mile high! We attempted to catch it with a container and Jon thought he had it when it jumped on his arm & he screamed (I did as well just for effect), then Joanna managed to get it & put it outside. Phew, glad it didn't do that during the night! Although these little ones are quite harmless, not like the big toads.
Every morning & night me & my little nephew (he's 2 and a half) go "og" (his name for frog, but he actually means toad) hunting. There are 3 that we know where they live, so we have named them Fred, Mack & Wooster and check on them everyday. He is quite good at spotting them and gets very excited when we find them. I pick him up so as not to get too close tho, because if they feel under attack they will shoot stuff at your eyes that if it gets in them will make you go blind. So although it keeps him (& me) occupied I make sure it's at a distance! There name in Spanish sounds like "Gestapo" so that's what I have named them!
We have met a few people around the town, and it seems that the conversation seems to go something like this Hola! then if I'm not with Jon, the next question is, Are you married to which I answer yes, then the next question is do you have any children, to which I answer no. Then they ask why!! So I tell that we are still practicing! They then carry on to tell me some story about how they never had the chance to do that, or that they were pregnant 1 month after getting married, and all this other stuff. It's quite amusing really.
GRINGOS (foreigner learning Spanish) CORNER:
Today I (Jon) tried the traditional "sopa". It is a bread type dish made in that outdoor oven in the photos. Anyway when I left I said "gracias por el sapo" which means thanks for the toad! LOL.
Anyway, that's enough for this week, we are well, the Easter break here started today (Wed) and is until Sunday, so we may do a few different things. Let you know about it next week!
Update 7 Photos.pdfJethrohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06946590523542404325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6159680.post-1144294768117439042006-04-06T13:31:00.000+10:002006-04-06T17:45:28.063+10:00Welcome Jacob!Jacob was born to Priscilla and Sjoerd van Ballegooy 2nd April!

Jethrohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06946590523542404325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6159680.post-1143986493102939972006-04-01T04:00:00.000+10:002006-04-03T00:01:33.176+10:00Happy Birthday PriscillaHappy Birthday Priscilla

Have a fantastic day!Jethrohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06946590523542404325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6159680.post-1143462787449957692006-03-27T22:32:00.000+10:002006-03-27T22:33:07.450+10:00Jadeens Birthday PartyLots of crazy photos of Jadeens 7th Birthday party on the millerfamily websiteJethrohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06946590523542404325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6159680.post-1131033212595425282005-11-04T01:52:00.000+10:002005-11-04T01:53:32.606+10:00Mercedes taken by GrandmaHere is a fantastic picture of Mercedes taken by Grandma while on holiday at Caloundra 2 November 2005.

Jethrohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06946590523542404325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6159680.post-1129618618662984362005-10-18T16:52:00.000+10:002005-10-18T16:56:58.666+10:00Happy 65th Birthday Dad65 years young is our Dad!
Here is a picture of him with his grand daughter Johanna.
Jethrohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06946590523542404325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6159680.post-1121984734582727722005-07-22T08:25:00.000+10:002005-07-22T08:25:34.586+10:00FathersWHAT IS A FATHER?
A father is a person who is forced to endure childbirth without
an anesthetic. He growls when he feels good and laughs very loud when
he is scared half-to-death.
A father never feels entirely worthy of the worship in a child's eyes.
He is never quite the hero his daughter thinks. Never quite the man
his son believes him to be. And this worries him sometimes. (So he works
too hard to try to smooth the rough places in the road of those of
his own who will follow him.)
A father is a person who goes to war sometimes...and would run
the other way except that war is part of an important job in his life
(which is making the world better for his child than it has been for him).
Fathers grow older faster than other people, because they,
in other wars, have to stand at the train station and wave goodbye to
the uniform that climbs on board.
And, while mothers cry where it shows, fathers stand and beam
...outside...and die inside.
Fathers are men who give daughters away to other men who
aren't nearly good enough, so that they can have children that are
smarter than anybody's.
Fathers fight dragons almost daily. They hurry away from the
breakfast table off to the arena, which is sometimes called an office
or a workshop. There they tackle the dragon with three heads:
Weariness, Works, and Monotony. And they never quite win the fight,
but they never give up.
Knights in shining armor; fathers in shiny trousers. There's little
difference as they march away each workday.
And when Father passes away, and after a good rest, he won't
just sit on a cloud and wait for the girl he's loved and the children
she bore. He'll be busy there too...repairing the stars, oiling the gates,
improving the streets, smoothing the way.
-- Author UnknownJethrohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06946590523542404325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6159680.post-1117122222899748972005-05-27T01:39:00.000+10:002005-05-27T01:43:42.913+10:00Happy Birthday JudithJudith turns 29 today!
Congratulations Judith.
Jethrohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06946590523542404325noreply@blogger.com
